We’ve been looking at quite a few speaker systems / docks recently – but the Cygnett Maestro has a little secret hidden within that classy design.

You see, the Maestro has the ability to run off both mains power and battery (4 x AA’s) – making this one very stylish portable music player. The Maestro is rated as “works with iPhone” and “made for iPod” as awarded by Apple. Let’s take a closer look at this little stroke of genius.

Features

  • Dedicated subwoofer & twin mid range speakers deliver powerful base & vivid mid tones
  • When a call comes through on your iPhone, the music volume automatically fades
  • Modern, functional design
  • Charges your iPhone or iPod
  • Battery operated (or mains) for portable music freedom
  • No annoying interference noise from your iPhone
  • Powerful & crystal-clear sound gives energy & soul to every track on your play list
  • 2 year manufacturer’s warranty

Design

We’ve already alluded a little to it’s tasty design – a very simple affair with a large speaker type mesh covered box, all held together with 2 bands of aluminium that act as the stands for the device. This looks very minimal and modern, which we like! Where plastic is used, it has a mottled, almost leather, type texture applied to it. This helps break up cheap looking plastic and give it a higher end appeal that is lacking on basically every other speaker-set in this price range.

Our favorite design feature has to be the hidden / enclosed battery compartment, accessible by simply firmly sliding the panel upwards. A very neat solution.

Overall, a very good looking little speaker system. Just check the pictures for yourself!

Sound

The Maestro offers up reasonable sound quality. It’s loud, relatively clear and has good range. The sound doesn’t emit with too much treble or bass – it’s basically just right. For the money, the Maestro really punches above it’s weight, thanks to the built in dedicated subwoofer & twin mid range speakers. The speakers are situated on the underneath, so you do get a little reflection off surfaces (or absorption if on carpet) which is beneficial and likely why it was placed here. Plus it looks better aesthetically.

Compatibility

The Maestro is compatible with the following Apple devices (all generations)

iPhone

iPod

iPod touch

iPod classic

iPod video

iPod shuffle

Portability

The Maestro isn’t just a desk-top speaker dock. Pick it up, throw in some batteries and you could use it anywhere! Such as your bathroom, in the garden, whilst street dancing – anywhere you go, the maestro will go too! Here it is in our office kitchen, whilst we make some soup! Look, no wires!

Conclusion

A great looking, modestly priced speaker system. Sound is good, with a wide range, reasonable bass and extra volume. Optional ability to power on batteries makes the Cygnett Maestro a brilliant piece of kit!
