Orange has revealed it sold as many as 30,000 iPhone’s on the first day of the phone’s availability on their network.
Orange initially stated they had broken the record for the most amount of a single handset sold in one day.
Cnet UK contacted O2 to double check the results. Here’s what an O2 spokesman told them:
“While we do not disclose sales figures for individual handsets, we can confirm that we sold considerably more than Orange are reporting on the day the iPhone 3GS went on sale,” before adding, “We really did, honest!”
For a second carrier, in a smaller country [than the U.S] and releasing what is in effect a 4 month old handset – the figures don’t look too bad. Orange has around 6 million less (16 million) subscribers than O2 (22 million). This signals that the phone is likely to take another large chunk of the market share, with more and more alternative carriers getting the device. This news also fuels rumors that Verizon may yet get an iPhone contract of sorts – something a lot of U.S clientele are begging for.
A third UK carrier, Vodafone, is set to get the iPhone in Q1 of 2010. This may or may not be followed by 3, who hinted they had been in talks with Apple regarding the iPhone.
Which carriers run in your country? Are you happy with the service? Would you like to see the iPhone on more carriers? Let us know!
