I have just purchased Mac speech Dictate 1.5. It was very easy to setup and I only had to spend three minutes or so on the training exercise–I was stopped in midstream as apparently competent! I have found it amazingly accurate with very few errors indeed. I cannot understand the adverse comments that have appeared on various websites. I imagine that, as referred to by a number of commentators, many of the criticisms were directed against older versions of the software.

For my part the software has almost taken over from the keyboard as I'm not a quick typist.

I have no hesitation in recommending the software. It is already proving to be a highly productive pool.

Incidentally, these comments have been typed using the software which has been 100% accurate.

Hi Robert, MacSpeech Dictate 1.5 requires Mac OS X 10.5.6 (Leopard) or later. The last version of MacSpeech Dictate that was compatible with Mac OS X 10.4.x (Tiger) was Dictate 1.3.

I have just switched back to Mac after 15 yaers on a PC, most of them using Dragon.

I have gone through five or six versions.

When it works, it is wonderful, but the system errors are almost endless, On V 10 after about 20 minutes the program simply orders me to close it.

However, it takes patience and consistency to use voice dictation and unlike other programs, this one will never be 100% correct, but if you use the correction tools it learns But if you are poor about your dictation skills, do not expect too much.

I will soon buy MacSpeech and give an evaluation and comparison.

Ben - Thanks for reviewing MacSpeech Dictate.

I work for MacSpeech (forgot to mention that above). I wanted to add a few things that may help clarify a few questions:

- MacSpeech Dictate requires USB microphone input. This is the way to get audio input that is sufficient for highly-accurate speech recognition on the Mac.

- It's great to see very few mistakes in your uncorrected dictation of this article. In practice, when first starting out, it is important to correct or "train" these misrecognitions so that MacSpeech Dictate learns from mistakes.

- Other editions of MacSpeech Dictate support French, German and Italian. There's also an edition that supports Medical dictation (in English).

Thanks!

MacSpeech Scribe is a new solution for automatically transcribing recorded audio of your own dictation. For example, record your dictation as a Voice Memo on your iPhone...then move the recording over to your Mac (via email or via iTunes). Or record directly on your Mac using QuickTime Player, et. al. MacSpeech Scribe can be set up to transcribe it.

Hello Doctor! You can quite easily convert a podcast to text, simply by listening to the podcast, and uttering the words. You may need to keep pausing the podcast to give you chance to say the previous line, but MSD does a brilliant job of converting speech to text. As to whether you could convert a whole podcast to text simply by playing the podcast into the mic, I'm less sure. If it was your own voice, perhaps this may work, but we haven't tested that. So in a way yes, and no - it's both possible and not possible depending on the method you choose.
