It’s inevitable: tax season is right around the corner. We start thinking about our finances a little more this time of year, as the date looms closer.Like everything in life, there’s an app for keeping us connected to our cash. Whether it’s for balancing our budget, check our financial status, or keep track of our receipts, we can easily do it with our iPhone or iPad.
Here are our top favorites.
TurboTax SnapTax
Free
TurboTax SnapTax is a free app (though it costs $19.99 to file) released by Intuit that allows users to e-file their federal taxes, as well as their state taxes, both using their iPhone. The app transfers information that is filled out on a 1040EZ form using a character-recognition technology, bringing it to the electronic version. Users can use their iPhone to take a picture of their tax form, answer a few questions to make sure that all of the information is correct, and SnapTax pretty much does the rest. It calculates the total amount owed or refunded in about half an hour, and the user can then select “purchase and file” as an option if they are good with what the results are.
TaxCaster
Free
This tax calculator for the iPhone and the iPad is also from Intuit. It lets you add in W2 income, business income, withholdings, deductions, tax credits and other options to et a quick estimate of your tax refund. We love it because of its features, and it also does a very accurate job of estimating your taxes.
H&R Block Tax Central
Free
Unlike other tax apps that send your info directly to the source, this one lets you just use the app to make your life easier, by prepping out your info. It lets you estimate how much you’ll get refunded or have to owe. It will provide you with the phone number and directions to any H&R Block location to speak with a professional. It will then keep you updated on the status of your refund and let you know when you might receive it.
Loan Calculator Pro
99 cents
Loan Calculator Pro lets you enter in the terms of any loan (home, car, et cetera) and it creates an amortization table to see how long it will take you to pay it off. It will also provide you with the details of how much interest you’ll pay, and various “what if” situations, such as if you make extra payments or miss a payment. Users can also track loans and add in payments as they are made. Calculations are done instantly after the amounts are entered, and users can easily bookmark and email information for keeping themselves up to date.
Receipts Pro
$4.99
Receipts Pro is a valuable tool for anyone who needs to keep track of receipts. The flexibility of the app includes advanced features such as custom receipt fields and repeating receipts. Users can capture a photo, save a voice memo, and add other attachments, such as an email. It is easy to create and organize various accounts and categories, and the information can be created into reports, graphs, and lists, all of which can be saved as a PDF, Excel or CSV file and uploaded to cloud services, such as Box.net, Evernote, Dropbox, and others.
Jackson Hewitt Mobile App
Free
This mobile app helps you in estimating and tracking your refund, along with locating Jackson Hewitt offices, and contacting them regarding schedules, appointments, special offers, and discounts. Users can also quickly find out the status of their tax return without having to call.
iBank
$4.99
This all purpose financial organizer helps you keep track of your chequing and savings accounts, as well as your cash and credit cards. Users can simply tap in their purchases on-the-go, with perks such asĀ split transactions and multi-currency support. It can also sync with iBank on your PC or Mac, along with other members of your household for up-to-date info.
Wikinvest Portfolio HD
Free
Wikinvest is a stock portfolio manager that lets you import and track your accounts from brokers such as Etrade, Schwab, Ameritrade, Fidleity, among others. With its nightly updates, it provides users to have the latest information on their investments right at their fingertips. It also includes tools to chart the portfolio’s performance. Other highlights include linking multiple accounts to track your investments, get partial valuation, income and balance sheet financials, visualize asset allocation by class and geography, analyze key metrics for risk, return, and dividend yields, and more.
Mint.com Personal Finance
Free
Mint.com allows users to track, budget and manage their money all in one place, essentially helping you save… and spend. You can add accounts, banks, loans, and other info, and it will then categorize all transactions for you automatically. It features easy-to-understand graphs, lets you know how much left you can spend, and helps you monitor cash flow.
