iPhone:Save money with iStash

Save money with iStash

iStash adds visualization to your piggybank, by calculating how much you’ve saved, how close to a target sum you are and more!

Remember that little piggy bank you had as a kid? Imagine having a great of way saving money, but on your iPhone. The sums of cash involved might have changed, but saving is still as fun and rewarding as ever before!

Price: $0.99 US / £0.59 GBP

We found iStash today when I was looking for a simple, “piggy-bank” like app for the iPhone. It was to help me save up some cash for a purchase that I’ve been meaning to make for a while, but never get round to because of so many other things vying for my money :) A quick search on the Appstore using the terms piggy-bank, and hey presto, about 30 seconds later I have a new to save cash. iStash has a tiny footprint of 333KB, so space is not going to be an issue. The interface is nice and simple, and easy to use.

Getting Started

To get saving, all you do is turn the app on, and hit the + button. This lets you set-up a new profile, and tell the app what your saving for and how much it will be. I enter the details..

Adding target

I decided that as the app doesn’t support GBP’s, I’d just convert the amount to USD’s. No problem. You could even just do a straight swap, and ignore the dollar sign all together.

And the little barometer works out how close you are to your goal, even giving a percentage and remaining amount to save. Clever! Only 77.47% to go!

As you get closer to your goal, the barometer changes color. Handy!

Made a mistake? Simply remove an amount you entered.

Conclusion

There’s not much to dislike about this app. Its well priced. It does the one thing it was designed for well. The interface is simple and uncluttered. I really like how quick it is to add more savings. You can add up to 5 profiles, each saving for a different goal. Its even got a handy calculator which will compute exactly how long till you get to your goal, based upon how much you’ll be saving per week.

A few minor issues:

  • There’s no support for currencies currently. Not a biggy, but it would be nice.
  • There’s no way to edit the amount your saving for, which you may need to use if your target changes price.
  • 5 profiles is quite a lot, but it would be nice to have more!
  • Doesn’t magically conjure up extra money :)

A decent app, that will help you see how close you are to your final target, helping motivation.
