Verizon Wireless and Microsoft have paired to launch their own touch-screen cell phone, out to presumably compete with the iPhone. The two major corporations are rumoured to teaming together to deliver a Windows running device giving Apple some smartphone competition.
The project, dubbed “Pink” was reported by The Wall Street Journal on Tuesday, tipped from an unnamed insider. The incognito individual claimed that the goal of the merge is to create a cell phone that extends Windows with with new software capabilities, combined with access to it’s version of Apple’s App Store, called the Windows Marketplace for Mobile.
PC World spoke with a Microsoft representative, who, although wouldn’t comment on the Verizon deal, did claim that that they, “work closely with many mobile operators and device makers around the world because customers want different experiences on a variety [of] phones.”
A little vague, as rumours have a tendency to be, but we do know that in January, Microsoft and Verizon signed a five-year $1 billion deal that solidified Microsoft’s Live Search to be the search engine for Verizon’s cell phones.
But with recent talks between Verizon and Apple, too, well, we just don’t know what’s to come. We’ll keep you posted on the updates.
